You have a website. It looks tidy, the services are listed.
But unless someone types your exact company name, nobody finds you on Google.

Enquiries come through referrals, almost never through search.
And you wonder: what is the cause, and who in Bern can help?

In this article we go through the most common causes, one at a time.
You get a 30-minute self-check, the order in which to tackle the problems, and an honest answer to the question of when an agency is worth it.

First check: is your website in Google’s index at all?

Before you work on texts or keywords, settle one basic question: does Google know your pages?
Type site:yourdomain.ch into Google. Do all the important pages show up? Only the home page? Nothing at all?

An example:
A fiduciary office in Bern got a new website in spring.
The developer had set “noindex” on the test version so Google would not show the building site.
At go-live the setting was forgotten. For five months the company was invisible to Google.

Another example:
After a relaunch, every page got a new address.
The old addresses, which Google had known for years, have led to an error page ever since.
Ten years of visibility gone in a few weeks.

You can see both for free in Google Search Console.
The “Pages” report shows which addresses Google knows and why individual ones are not in the index.
If you have never set up Search Console: that is the first step, before anything else.

The six most common reasons a website is barely found

If your pages are in the index but still nobody comes, it is almost always one of these.

1. The website does not answer a search
Many SME websites consist of “Welcome”, “About us” and “Contact”.
Nobody searches Google for “Welcome”. People search for “emergency plumber Bern” or “physiotherapy Köniz”.
Without a page of its own for each service, Google has nothing to show for that search.

2. There is no local reference
The site says “across Switzerland” or nothing at all about location.
For a search with “Bern”, “Thun” or “Burgdorf” that is not enough.
Google wants to know where you work and for whom.

3. The Google Business Profile is missing or empty
For local searches Google shows the map with three listings first.
Google names three factors for it: relevance, distance and prominence.
A profile without a category, services, photos and reviews loses on all three.

4. The technology holds you back
The site loads slowly, is barely readable on a phone or has broken links after the relaunch.
Google rates pages the way visitors experience them. What annoys on a phone ranks badly.

5. There are no signals from outside
No reviews, no directory listings, no mentions on other websites.
According to the BrightLocal Local Consumer Review Survey 2025, only 4 percent of consumers never read online reviews.
Google sees it the same way: what nobody mentions counts as unknown.

6. The expectation is wrong
The website is three weeks old and is supposed to be on page one already.
Organic visibility builds over months, not days.
That is not a flaw in your site. It is simply how it works.

The 30-minute self-check

With these six checks you know where you stand in half an hour.
All you need is a browser and a phone.

CheckHowGood if …
IndexGoogle: site:yourdomain.chall service pages appear
Company nameGoogle: your company name + Bernwebsite and Business Profile are at the top
Service + placeGoogle: your main service + Bernyou are on page one (otherwise note the position)
Business ProfileGoogle Maps: your company namecategory, opening hours, photos, reviews are there
Phoneopen the website on a phonereadable in under three seconds, phone number tappable
Old addressesopen an old page addressit redirects to the new page, no error page

Write the results down. That is your starting point.
In three months you run the same check again.

The order in which to tackle the problems

Not everything at once. The order decides whether you see anything in three months.

Step 1: technology and index
Set up Search Console, remove “noindex”, redirect old addresses, check load time.
Without this base every further effort evaporates.

Step 2: Google Business Profile
Fill it in completely: category, services, opening hours, photos of your premises.
Then ask three satisfied customers for a review. Nothing works faster.

Step 3: one page per service
For each main service, a page of its own with a clear title, a local reference and a way to get in touch.
How to build such pages is in our guide to local SEO in Bern.

Step 4: content that answers questions
One article a month on a question customers ask you on the phone.
Google describes this approach itself in its SEO Starter Guide: helpful content for people, not for machines.

Step 5: measure
Calls, form enquiries, clicks in the Business Profile, position for “service + Bern”.
Only with numbers do you know whether it is working.

Who can help in Bern – and when it is worth it

Steps 1 and 2 you can do yourself, or with whoever looks after your website.
From step 3 it becomes work: writing texts, structuring pages, checking continuously.

An agency is worth it if one of these applies:

  • Nobody on the team has two to three hours a week to spare for it.
  • Your industry in Bern is competitive and the competition already works with an agency.
  • The website is technically so old that repairing it no longer pays.
  • You want to tackle advertising or social media alongside Google and need one contact for everything.

Depending on the situation, the right help differs:

  • An SEO agency in Bern if the website is solid and only the visibility is missing.
  • A web agency if the technical base cannot be saved. SEO then belongs in the rebuild from day one.
  • A marketing agency in Bern if Google is only part of the problem and advertising, branding or social media are on the list too.

How to recognise a good proposal: it names concrete tasks per month instead of “optimisation”.
It says what is not included. And it promises no page-one position by a date.
What SEO costs in Switzerland and how to compare proposals is in our guidance on SEO costs.

If you need enquiries faster than SEO can deliver them, Google Ads with an agency is the bridge. Which channel fits when is explained in our comparison SEO or Google Ads.

What to expect in the first three months

After steps 1 and 2 you often see more views in the Business Profile and first calls from the map within weeks.
New service pages usually need two to four months before they rank stably.
Contested terms like “fiduciary Bern” take longer and need ongoing work.

Always compare the same period: three months before with three months after.
And compare enquiries, not just positions. A position is worth nothing if nobody calls.
