You are looking for an agency for your SME in Bern. As you compare, you quickly notice there are three very different kinds.
The specialist who does one thing only. The full-service agency that offers everything. And the large network agency with offices in several countries.

All three have their place. But not for the same situation.
Pick the wrong type and you either pay for coordination nobody does, or for structure you do not need.

In this article we explain the three types in plain words, show when each one fits, and give you five questions that let you decide in half an hour.
No agency names. You should recognise the types, not work through a list.

The three agency types in plain words

The specialist
Does one thing, and does it very well: only SEO, only Google Ads, only branding, only web development.
Usually a small team or a single person with a lot of depth in their own field.
Whatever lies outside it, you organise yourself or buy from someone else.

The full-service agency
Covers the digital channels under one roof: website, SEO, advertising, branding, social media.
You have one contact, and the parts are aligned with each other.
At small full-service agencies you work directly with the people who do the work.

The network agency
Part of an international group, with hundreds of employees and offices in several countries.
Built for big brands with big budgets and campaigns across several markets.
The process is strong, so is the structure. Both cost money.

When a specialist is the right choice

A specialist fits when your problem is clearly defined and the rest runs well internally.

An example:
A trading business in Bern has a good website, an employee who looks after social media, and a brand everyone is happy with.
Only the Google visibility is missing. An SEO specialist is enough here. Anything else would be overhead.

Typical situations for a specialist:

  • A single, technically defined task: an SEO audit, a shop migration, a logo.
  • You have someone internally who coordinates marketing and holds the parts together.
  • You want to test one channel first before investing more.

The limit: as soon as two specialists work on the same thing, say the web developer and the SEO consultant, you are the project manager.
If nobody on the team can be that, the advantage tips over.

When a full-service agency brings more

A full-service agency fits when several things are due at the same time and nobody coordinates internally.

The advantage is not that “everything from one source” sounds nicer.
The advantage is that the parts interlock: the website is built so that SEO works. The ads lead to pages made for them. The branding is the same on the website and on Instagram.

An example:
A practice in Bern changes its name, needs a new website and wants to become visible.
With three specialists that is three briefings, three schedules and three invoices, and the logo arrives two weeks after the website launch.
With one team it is one project with one sequence.

A new website and social media from one team

The most common combination SMEs in Bern ask about: a new website, and someone who looks after social media at the same time.
The two really do belong together, for three reasons.

  • The same content. Photos, texts and offers created for the website are the material for the first three months of social media. Commissioned separately, they get made twice.
  • The same launch. The launch of a website is the best occasion for social media content. If the agency does both, the launch plan is one plan.
  • The same numbers. What brings clicks on Instagram lands on the website. One team sees both sides and sends visitors to the right page.

That is why our web development and our social media marketing run in the same project, with the same contact.
At KinouLou (2024) exactly this combination worked: Instagram from zero to over 850 followers in three months, the website from zero to over 1,000 visitors a month.

The limit of the full-service agency: it is only as good as its weakest area.
So ask who actually does the work and whether individual services can be booked on their own. If not, “full-service” is often a forced bundle.

When a network agency fits, and when it does not

A network agency fits when you roll out a campaign in five countries, run a brand with national TV presence or have a budget for which the agency assigns a team of its own just to you.

For an SME in Bern it usually does not fit. Not because the work would be bad, but because of the structure:

  • You are the smallest account. The experienced people work on the big clients. Your project lands with the junior team.
  • The contact changes. Account management is a department of its own, and it has turnover. Every few months you explain your business again.
  • The process is built for big companies. Approval rounds, status meetings and presentations a corporation needs make no sense for a ten-person company, but they cost.
  • The minimum budgets. Below a certain size a network agency does not take the account at all, or only reluctantly.

That is why the answer to “Which agencies in Bern are better suited to SMEs than large network agencies?” is almost always: a small full-service agency nearby, or a specialist.
You work with the founders, your account matters, and the lines are short.

Decision aid: five questions

Answer these five questions honestly. The majority of the answers shows the type.
